🦉 Fun Fact: Snowy Owls Love Northwest Alberta!

If you’ve spotted a flash of white wings across the winter landscape, you’re not imagining things. Snowy owls regularly visit our region.

Here's why our northern prairies are perfect for these stunning Arctic birds:

❄️ Born for the cold: Snowy owls thrive in wide-open, snowy environments, and our northern prairies match their Arctic habitat.

🐭 Plenty of prey: With abundant voles, mice, and small mammals, our area provides plenty of food for these snowy visitors.

🌬️ Open landscapes: Fields and farmland give them the perfect hunting grounds to spot prey from far away.

🧭 Irruption visitors: Some winters, snowy owls travel farther south when Arctic food supplies are low, bringing more of them to our region.

❄️ Check out Kakwa Falls this winter!

Surrounded by epic backcountry scenery, the area is home to incredible snowmobiling routes through Kakwa Provincial Park and the Golden Triangle, which offers over 350 km of connected trails linking Saddle Hills County, Whitecourt, and Fox Creek.

The ride in is part of the adventure, with remote terrain, forest corridors, and wide-open winter landscapes at every turn. A short 1.2 km hike from the day-use area leads to Kakwa Falls, frozen into a stunning wall of ice and mist. The view is definitely worth the trip.

💡 Know before you go:
• Be self-sufficient! This is a remote location with no cell service.
• Bear safety still matters, even in the winter.
• Steep, rugged terrain. Ice cleats are recommended if you’re hiking in!
