There are few things more inspiring than seeing a beautiful landscape in person, and the region south of Grande Prairie offers some incredible views. From the foothills that rise to meet majestic mountain peaks to the rolling plains that gave the city its name, there’s plenty to inspire outdoor explorers of all ages. Know Before You Go:
If you’re visiting or don’t own a car, you can rent a vehicle at the Grande Prairie Airport. This itinerary is based around the Grande Cache area, approximately two hours south of Grande Prairie, so you’ll need a vehicle to get around.
Make sure you pack suitable outdoor gear, including a broken-in pair of hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face.
If you’re the camping type, try to snag a spot at the Smoky River South Provincial Recreation Area, located on the banks of the river. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so keep your fingers crossed! If the campground is full, head a few minutes south to try your luck at the Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area, which features a trailhead surrounded by incredible natural scenery.
If camping isn’t your thing or you’d prefer a more comfortable stay, head into town and book a room at the Grande Cache Inn & Suites. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, the inn offers comfortable accommodations and a convenient base for exploring the area’s trails, mountain peaks, and lakes.

In Grande Prairie, visit one of the excellent coffee shops, cafes, or bakeries to enjoy a filling breakfast and a hot coffee before heading south on Highway 40. The drive to Grande Cache takes about two hours, and you’ll notice the landscape shift as you approach the Rockies along the way.
Stop by the Grande Cache Tourism Centre if you need tips about the area, a walking map, or other local recommendations. The staff are there to help you make the most of your visit, so take advantage of their local knowledge!

Then, head over to Labyrinth Park, where you can wander among the uniquely designed rock formations. With its natural echoes and peaceful atmosphere, it’s a lovely place to finish your breakfast and prepare for the day ahead.
Grande Cache offers numerous opportunities for day hikes, so choosing a trail really comes down to your preferences and skill level. For a family-friendly option, consider the Eaton Falls trail within Willmore Wilderness Park, south of town. The trail is only a few kilometres long but offers beautiful views for relatively little effort. More experienced hikers can explore the Passport to the Peaks program, which encourages hikers to climb the mountain peaks surrounding the area.
In the late afternoon, it’s time to head back to Grande Prairie! Load up the car and make your way north on Highway 40, taking in the mountain scenery along the way. Enjoy a relaxing drive back and reflect on the outdoor adventures and beautiful landscapes you’ve experienced throughout your trip.
