McNaught Homestead Preservation Society

Formed in 2005, the McNaught Homestead Preservation Society is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the historic homestead of Euphemia McNaught, one of Alberta’s most celebrated artists and a key figure in the province’s cultural legacy. Now stewards of the property, the Society works to protect this important heritage site while welcoming visitors to experience its history, landscape, and artistic roots. The homestead is open to the public seven days a week throughout the day, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the grounds and marked trails at their own pace. The trail to the boardwalk is approximately one kilometre, with another 100 metres or so leading to the viewing blind. Vehicles are not permitted beyond the yard, helping preserve the natural landscape and peaceful character of the site. A caretaker is present most days and can answer questions about the property. With advance arrangements and weather permitting, transportation to the boardwalk may also be available. Visitors interested in learning more about the history of the homestead and the McNaught family can arrange for a more detailed history of the site with advance notice. As a non-profit organization, the Society also hosts a series of annual events that bring the homestead to life. The Spring Gala Auction showcases local creativity and supports ongoing preservation efforts; the July Festival invites visitors to explore the grounds, meet artists and crafters, and enjoy guided tours to the nearby lake; and the beloved October Ghost Walk transforms the property into an atmospheric, lantern-lit experience filled with storytelling and seasonal charm. With its blend of art, history, community, and natural beauty, the McNaught Homestead offers visitors a meaningful connection to the Peace Country’s cultural heritage and a chance to explore the legacy of one of Alberta’s influential artists.
