Sulphur Gates Campground
Sulphur Gates Campground is a remote and scenic camping destination located within the Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area in west-central Alberta. Nestled near the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur Rivers, the campground is known for its striking natural features, including steep canyon walls and panoramic viewpoints accessible via short hiking trails.
The campground offers a rustic, nature-focused experience with approximately 15 unserviced campsites and over 20 equestrian sites equipped with corrals, hitching rails, and loading ramps. It serves as a popular staging area for horseback riders and hikers heading into the nearby Willmore Wilderness Park, making it especially appealing for backcountry adventurers.
Amenities are basic and designed to preserve the area’s natural character, including fire pits, pit/vault toilets, and a hand pump for water, though visitors are encouraged to bring their own drinking water. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and remains open year-round, though access may be limited in winter due to unmaintained roads.
Wildlife is abundant in the surrounding area, with species such as elk, deer, moose, bears, and bighorn sheep inhabiting the region. Combined with its quiet atmosphere and rugged terrain, Sulphur Gates Campground offers a more secluded and immersive outdoor experience compared to larger, more developed parks—ideal for those seeking solitude and a deeper connection to Alberta’s wilderness.
