Halloween in Northwest Alberta: Ghost Walks, Haunted Mazes & Fall Frights
When October rolls in and the sun starts disappearing a little earlier (okay, a lot earlier), Northwest Alberta takes on a different kind of vibe.
Around the Grande Prairie region, corn mazes get a little creepier, historic buildings feel a little more mysterious, and perfectly ordinary country roads can lead you somewhere you definitely weren’t expecting. Halloween is a great excuse to get out, explore the region, and see Northwest Alberta after dark.
Explore Heritage Village After Dark
When the sun goes down, the Grande Prairie Museum Historical Village comes alive with local ghost stories, legends and tales from the past.
On October 16 and 17, step back in time with the Heritage Village Folktales Tour. Follow the lantern-lit paths on a guided evening walking tour where local history, eerie legends and spooky new stories bring the Village to life. Discover a different side of Grande Prairie’s history as you hear tales from the past, encounter a few unexpected surprises and keep an eye on the shadows. You never know what you’ll find.

Get Lost After Dark at the Grande Prairie Corn Maze
The GP Corn Maze takes on a whole new personality after sunset.
Throughout the Halloween season, special events such as Flashlight Night, Fright Night, and Maze in the Dark give visitors the chance to navigate the maze without the benefit of daylight. If making your way through a corn maze during the day isn’t challenging enough, try finding your way out when you can’t see what’s around the next corner.
Keep up to date with corn maze events, hours, and opening times here.

Step Into the Shadows of the McNaught Homestead
For a Halloween experience with a little more history behind it, head to the McNaught Homestead near Beaverlodge.
The annual McNaught Homestead Ghost Walk takes place on October 17, 23, 24, and 30th, inviting visitors onto the historic property after dark. The combination of historic buildings, rural surroundings, and nighttime storytelling creates an atmosphere that’s very different from a traditional haunted attraction. It’s a great choice for visitors who enjoy their Halloween experiences with a side of local history.
The gates open at 6:30pm, with the Ghost Walk running until 10:00pm, except on October 30th, when it runs from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. Admission is by donation.

Choose Your Fright at Hornbrook Hollow Haunt
If you’re looking for something with more jump scares, Hornbrook Hollow Haunt brings Halloween scares to the Grovedale this October.
The attraction offers both daytime and nighttime experiences, including a more intense scare-maze experience for those who are ready to turn up the fright factor. Different levels of scare make it possible to choose an experience that fits your group.
This is one to put on the list when you’re looking for an evening of Halloween entertainment.

Face the Field of Nightmares
Halloween gets serious at Blachford Field of Nightmares at Evergreen Park.
The after-dark haunted attraction is designed for visitors looking for a more traditional scare experience, with an immersive setting that makes the most of the October night.
If haunted attractions are your idea of a perfect Halloween outing, this is one to add to the itinerary.
Note: This is a little scarier experience for the littles, so we recommend for the 14+ crowd.
Put on a Costume and Hit the Trails
Not every Halloween adventure needs to be scary.
Turn up the fun factor on October 31 with the Trick or Trot 5K/10K Run/Walk, hosted by Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park, at The Dunes Golf & Winter Club near Grande Prairie. It’s a more active way to celebrate the season, with participants choosing between a 5K or 10K trail route.
The 10K starts at 10:00am, followed by the 5K at 10:15am. Costumes are encouraged, so you can trade the haunted house for a Halloween morning on the trails.
It’s a fun option for runners, walkers, families, and anyone who would rather spend Halloween getting some fresh air than hiding from things that go bump in the night.
